Preparing to Coach Youth Hockey in Massachusetts for the 2019-2020 Season

This note is addressed to all registered coaches in Massachusetts. I hope you are preparing to coach again this season, and that it will be a great experience for you and your players. Feel free to share with other interested coaches.

Coaching Your Team

If you think there are a lot of “requirements” to be a youth coach, you are correct.  All of them, whether they are registration-related or education-related, have been enacted because they are good for our young players. Some have a cost – hopefully your hockey program will reimburse you for them
Registration – You need to register with USA Hockey as a Coach. This provides you with ongoing information about coaching during the season and with some insurance coverages that can benefit you. Be sure to align these with your own insurance, of course. This must be done before you participate with your team. Click &/or copy & paste this link: https://www.usahockeyregistration.com

Background & CORI Checks – This is a different process from last season. We removed the CORI paper application process, everything is online. This must be done before you participate with your team. Click &/or copy & paste this link: http://bit.ly/2019BScreening. There is no added cost for this. It is included in your USA Hockey Registration fee. (Please note you will need to upload a copy of your driver’s license so you may want to do that in advance.)
SafeSport – Changes in this program were sent to all registered coaches in June, 2019. If you completed it last season, you should be OK, otherwise you’ll need to re-do it. Check out more information on the USA Hockey web site at https://www.usahockey.com/safesporttraining. There is no cost for this.

*Note that starting this season USA Hockey is now requiring that all coaches and all players 17 and older (2002, 2001, 2000 birth year) must complete Safesport Training. All coaches, officials, volunteers and players WILL NOT be allowed on a roster until the SafeSport training is completed and reflected within their USA Hockey Registration. Coaching Education – Online Age-Specific Modules – These have been revised to work on USA Hockey’s new learning platform. Coaches need to complete these before participating with their team, so that the age-specific training elements can be incorporated into your practice planning and parent communications. Click &/or copy & paste this link: https://www.usahockey.com/agespecificmodules
Coaching Education – Clinics – If your Coaching Education Clinic credential expires this fall, you need to move to the next level (or possibly renew if at Level 3). For specifics on Coaching Clinic requirements, visit: https://www.usahockey.com/coachingclinics. Clinic Schedules can be found at this page as well. Clinics will be offered from mid-August through late-December, 2019. The deadline for attending a clinic is December 31.

High-Level Coaching Clinics
We have planned ONE Level 4 Clinics during the fall. Level 4 is a 2-day Symposium format, with classroom (and sometimes on-ice) instruction in a variety of coaching-related areas. Registration is done online as with all USA Hockey Clinics. It will take place Saturday, October 5, 2019 to Sunday, October 6, 2019 in North Falmouth, Massachusetts. Register as soon as possible, first come first serve. Click &/or copy & paste this link: https://www.usahockey.com/coachingclinics.
Level 5 is a national clinic/symposium, usually beginning on a Thursday evening and running through mid-day the following Sunday. If you are interested in attending Level 5, as of now, it is planned for August, 2020, in a Midwest U.S. location.   More specific information will be available this Fall 2019. A recap of the 2018 Level 5 can be found here: https://www.usahockey.com/level5

High Performance Clinics are sometimes scheduled around certain events or for specific purposes, such as Goaltending or Girls/Women's Hockey. More information on this will be available in January, 2020.

Bruins Coaching Symposium will take place this upcoming fall. It will be a coaching clinic for those looking to complete their Level 2 or Level 3 coaching clinic certification. The date and time has yet to be announced. We will send out notice and post online when the date & time is available.
